How long have you been a makeup artist for and how did you get your start in the beauty industry?

Anthonia: I’ve been a makeup artist since 2013. At that point, makeup wasn’t a career choice for me. I just liked art and makeup. Then, I got a job at Mac Cosmetics and that’s where I really discovered my passion for makeup. After
working there for 3 years, I decided to branch out and explore other parts of the industry. I definitely learned so much working at Mac, but going out on my own was exactly what I needed. I’ve explored the film/TV industry, I’ve done tons of bridal makeup, theatre, photoshoots, makeup seminars and of course, the day-to-day clients who are just looking for a simple look. I made sure I explored various areas of the makeup industry, and each one brought me a different opportunity.

What is the most important beauty advice that you can give to make-up lovers?

Anthonia: The most important advice I can give is to try to learn how to use the same product for multiple things. Save your money! Don’t get caught up in buying every single product that comes out. A lot of the stuff you think you need, you already have. We all know how expensive makeup can be! Once you understand your products and what their purposes are, you end up saving some money and using it for more useful things.

We’ve all had those days where we are too busy or in too much of a rush to wear a full face of makeup. A lot of other people just prefer a more natural look. Can you give our readers some tips and tricks for a quick yet classy makeup look before heading for work or for a casual night out?

Anthonia: I totally understand. I’m a makeup artist and I don’t even wear a full face every day. I only do so if I have an event to attend, or if I have to post content on my Instagram page or record a video for my YouTube channel.
One of my favourite everyday looks is a soft glam. It can be worn for daytime or night time. It’s quick,
easy, and just brings out natural beauty – no intense highlight and contour, no smokey eye, just keep it simple and fresh. In my opinion, glowing skin, some liner, and a bold lipstick is such a classy combo. It will
never go out of trend and it looks beautiful on everyone.

But each person has their own interpretation of what “natural makeup” really looks like. So just find one or two things that you would like to enhance or cover, and go from there. If you have dark circles under your eyes, just use concealer. If you think you are too pale and you just need your skin to look healthier, apply some bronzer. What is fundamental is taking care of your skin and letting it breathe.

Speaking of healthy skin – we all know that no matter how well we apply our makeup or how many products we put on our face, it simply will not look flawless if we are applying it on bad skin. What are some of the skincare products that you depend on to keep your skin healthy?

Anthonia: Yes! Skincare is so important. It makes such a big difference with how smoothly your makeup applies on your skin and with how everything lasts throughout the day. If you are taking care of your skin and using products
specifically for your skin type, then it’s a win-win. Not only will your makeup look way better, but you will also feel more confident without makeup.

Customer: Before and After.

As for choosing specific products, it can be tricky! Skincare is very personal. I’ve chosen to go natural for my skincare regimen – it works for me and I’m happy with it. I do, however, really recommend talking to a skincare expert before committing to a routine. He/she will help you determine what’s best for you and could suggest certain products that would be effective for you.

Which brands (both high-end and drugstore) you cannot live without ?

Anthonia: It’s so hard to choose because I keep discovering amazing brands all the time. Currently, my go-to drugstore products are The Colossal Bigshot Volum’ Express mascara and the Eye studio lasting gel eyeliner from Maybelline, Nyx Lipsticks and Lipliners, and Morphe’s Brushes and Eyeshadow Palettes. As for high-end products, I love MAC’s lipsticks and Mineralized Skin finish powders, Anastasia Beverly Hills’ brow products and Liquid lipsticks, and Becca highlighters.

What have been some of the highlights of your career?

Anthonia: There have been many highlights in my career in the past 5 years as a makeup artist. The amount of opportunities and people you meet in each avenue of makeup artistry is endless. That’s why I would never give up this job for anything. One of the biggest highlights of my career is glamming up the US ambassador’s wife and the Nigerian ambassador’s wife.  How cool is that?! I’ve also had three opportunities to travel to the US: two of them were for bridal events and one was for a makeup competition in Los Angeles. I won second place in that competition!

I’ve also had the opportunity to give makeup seminars at a makeup school and a fashion school here in Ottawa. I could go on and on about all the amazing opportunities I’ve had over the years, but these are some of my favourites!

Where and from whom do you get your inspiration from?

Anthonia: I get my inspiration from everywhere and anyone who is an artist. They don’t even have to be famous. Anyone who does their work well inspires me. I just love seeing how other artists showcase their work. I also love observing my surroundings – there are so many beautiful shapes, colours and textures out there. Art is everywhere.

Social media has become a major part of many makeup artists’ marketing strategies. How has social media helped you advance in your career? Has it opened doors and opportunities for you? Has it harmed you in any way?

Anthonia: Social media definitely has its ups and downs. I personally love it because it’s my portfolio to showcase all the different styles of my makeup looks. If you visit my Instagram page, you can see that I truly love what I do. It certainly opened so many doors for me since it’s such a great way to market. As much as I tend to turn it into a job sometimes, I try to keep it fun and not too serious.  For me, Instagram is a way to keep my followers updated on what I’m doing, give them recommendations and for me to stay connected with the makeup community. There’s definitely another side of social media that can bring negativity, but I don’t let that bother me. I know what I want and I know what my goals are for my career. My only job on Instagram is to create, educate and have fun in the process.

What advice can you give to aspiring makeup artists?

Anthonia: The one advice I can give an aspiring makeup artist is to do as much research as possible about this industry before diving in. Find people who are already in the industry and ask them questions. Take classes, learn proper fundamentals of makeup artistry! It’s very important to stay educated.  There’s always new trends and new ways of doing old tricks. This will help you feel more confident once you start taking on clients. It’s a very rewarding career – you just have to know it’s not as easy as people make it seem.
